The 3 things you SHOULD know about fuel contamination!

Run Out of Fuel Assistance

Out of fuel in Park Street (out of gas - as an American might say)? We operate a complete Hertfordshire Out of Fuel Service. We can easily help to refill your car if you are stranded on the motorway, on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere, or even at home. Our specialists can come out to you with 10-20 litres of the right fuel (purchased at pump prices) and fill your car or truck. They are also able to handle any of the typical troubles that might go along with running out of fuel - like airlocks, vehicle unable to restart, and even flat batteries as a result of over-cranking.

AdBlue In your Fuel

In Hertfordshire we are finding increasingly more instances of AdBlue contamination when somebody has put AdBlue into their diesel tank. This is to some extent a result of motorists not understanding the right way to use it (please note: it's in fact not a fuel additive), and to some extent due to the fact that the filler caps for diesel and AdBlue are often directly next to each other on the vehicle.

Well, what is the problem with having AdBlue in a diesel vehicle?

Because AdBlue is mostly ionised water, it is actually as bad as pouring water in your tank. Diesel and water don't blend in the least and trying to run a diesel car on water will never work. Furthermore, the urea is very corrosive to fuel system pipes and seals and is more prone to crystalising, clogging injectors and fuel filters. Assuming you have put AdBlue in your fuel tank empty it right away. And absolutely take care not to turn over the car - not even to move it from the pump. If perhaps you did start the vehicle you would in all probability need to have the whole fuel system cleaned and fuel filters changed out.

Give us a call in the event that you are struggling with AdBlue contamination. We will help you. We are Contaminated Fuel Specialists and have the ability to attend to different types of AdBlue contamination.

Wrong Fuel in Car in AL2 Postcode - Park Street Misfueling

Just had a fantastic night of uninterrupted sleep! 7:30 on a rainy Tuesday and we were on the way to assist an older lady who put petrol in her diesel bright red Volvo960 in Park Street. She told us that she had driven away from the petrol station and was broken down along a country lane on the way to pay a visit to her family. I plugged the location in the Satnav and was on-scene within an hour or so. I arrived at the vehicle and removed the contaminated fuel from the vehicle. As I was doing it she said to me, "I am getting fairly forgetful in my senior years and forgot about the car working with diesel seeing that I'd just purchased it a few days back after my previous one, which I'd had for about 30 years, finally broke down". I got the job completed and she gave me a peppermint and thanked me for my hard work. Such a lovely Hertfordshire woman!

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VAT receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
